Travel Journal November 2009
Area of operation
Travel Journal November 2009 (begins in Fremont, IN)
After the “flu epidemic” danger had passed with Michael and the kids, we drove to Fort Wayne on November 1st,
where we were met and treated with T-Bone steaks cooked on the grill for supper.   We were surprised how much
Keith and Katja had grown in the past two years.

The next three weeks were quite busy and strenuous.  Not all inclusive, but it involved unpacking, re-packing, to-
and-from storage, new carpet for the RV, a full household cleaning, and the major undertaking of replacing the
bed.  The pressed-wood bed frame didn’t last the 50,000+ miles we have travelled in the RV.  Chuck removed it
and replaced it with a steel frame construction, covered with paneling. It weighs less and is much sturdier than the
original. Weight is always a factor to consider in an RV.

But it wasn’t only work, work, and work.  We also had some good times with Michael and the kids going out to eat or
visiting friends (see photos). Michael’s life as a single parent is somewhat intensive and we are very proud of him.
After the work day ends, it begins again at home.  Helping with homework and serving as the taxi driver for Keith
and Katja to this or that meeting or basketball practice, etc.  During the week it is very difficult to find everyone
at home until in the evening, and even then, school/activities and related meetings interfere with having the whole
family together simultaneously.  On an average, every other weekend Michael drives 50 miles to a rendezvous
point with the ex and the kids spend the weekend with her.  He then drives the 50 miles on Sunday evening to pick
them up.  He rarely has time for himself.

After the three weeks in Fort Wayne, we began our journey to Falmouth, KY where we were to be the hosts for
the annual Morton Christmas gathering, normally held in early December.  It was scheduled for December 5th and
would require us to arrive early to get ready for it.  On the way to KY, we stopped in Indianapolis, IN to visit our
friend Ruth Lang.  Ruth had worked and car-pooled with us in Las Cruces, NM.  She invited us for Thanksgiving,
along with her sister Kathleen, brother-in-law Dick, and their daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren (see photos).

Our departure from Fort Wayne wasn’t without incident.  The motorized jacks for the RV quit working and had to
be manually cranked up.  Additionally, Renée developed a severe toothache that turned out to be an abscess.   On
the way to Indianapolis, we contacted an RV repair shop and had to stay there for two nights while awaiting parts.
In the meantime, Renée visited an emergency dental clinic and received treatment and antibiotics. After all of this
was accomplished, we moved to the Indianapolis State Fairgrounds.

On the Friday after Thanksgiving, we invited Ruth, Kathleen and Dick to the
Rathskeller.  We had been there with
them a few years ago.  The food is good and the imported draft beer is the real thing.

On the 29th we were again invited for supper at Ruth’s and the following morning we left for KY where we found
our favorite spot unoccupied at Kincaid Lake State Park, a few miles from Falmouth.  Actually, the entire park was
unoccupied.  Lobo enjoyed his freedom to roam around.  We immediately began with our preparations for the
Christmas party.

To be continued…
